The Indian automobile market has matured tremendously and gone are
the days when only price and kmpl matter. Of course they are an ever so
important consideration for a car purchase but now the India car-buyer
wants that something extra and he wants style, features and yes even
performance. The concept of hot hatchback is still in its infancy in
India but is a rage in Europe.
The hot hatchback is essentially puting a big engine in a small car plus some sporty styling. This shows that you do not have to spend big money to have fun behind the wheel. In India the Fiat Palio 1.6 started the trend and now it is carried over by the Toyota Liva 1.5 and the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI. So among all these hot hatchbacks, Maruti should also bring the Swift Sport. The Swift is a sporty hatch and we love to drive it- a sentiment shared by many of its owners. However the Sport version just takes it to the next level.
It may not be a volume proposition but the brand Swift will be benefited by the Sport version. While we cannot expect the 136 bhp engine in the international version as it would be too expensive, there are other options available. Maruti can use the Ertiga's 1.4 l engine or even better the 1.6 engine from the SX4. The 1.4 the petrol K-series engine could be a practical option which makes 95 PS at 6000 rpm and has max torque of 130 Nm@4000 rpm. The bigger engine is a 1.6 litre petrol version which develops 104 PS which would make this hot hatch dance.
Along with a more powerful engine there would also be sporty styling. The Swift Sport will get a large front grille plus big fog lamps that add even more sporting character. Also expect tasty 17 inch allloys which are wrapped in 195/45R17 tyres. Other than that expect a spoiler, side skirts also. The inside will see new upholstery and changed instruments.
The Swift Sport will be more expensive than the 'normal' Swift but with these looks plus the performance we do not think any one would mind
